What do students do?
Students click their way into a living cell and meet every part of it, down to the ribosomes. Each organelle opens a plain-language job description and a real electron microscope photo, so the friendly cartoon model keeps getting checked against the actual gray machinery. Then the experiments start. Cut off food and oxygen and watch the energy line fall as the mitochondria run out. Rescue a starving plant cell by raising the light until its chloroplasts level the line. Flood both cell types with water and compare the swelling animal cell to the wall-protected plant cell. Students can also chill or warm the whole cell and watch every delivery inside it speed up or slow down.
What does it cover?
NGSS MS-LS1-2: develop and use a model to describe the function of a cell as a whole and the ways parts of cells contribute to the function. The interactive is the model. Students use it to connect structure to function for the membrane, nucleus, mitochondria, chloroplasts, and vacuoles, and the worksheet ends with them drawing and defending a cell model of their own. How long does it take?
