Dig through twelve real Colorado rock layers, brush the dirt off their fossils, and graph how life appeared, spread, died out, and grew more complex.

What do students do?
A 4,840 meter column of real Colorado rock, from High Plains grassland at the surface down to Precambrian basement. Students drag the dig depth slider or step down one layer at a time, then swipe across the dirt to brush the sediment away and uncover the fossils buried in that layer: grazing horses near the top, Triceratops and one of the last ammonites just below the 66-million-year line, Stegosaurus in the Morrison Formation, an armored jawed fish, trilobites, and finally stromatolites at the very bottom. Nearly every uncovered fossil can be tapped for a photo of a real specimen and a list of its body structures, which drive a complexity meter. Three graphs turn the digging into data. Depth against age jumps wherever an unconformity skipped time, including the Great Unconformity's missing 580 million years. Biodiversity drops and recovers across the extinction line. Body complexity climbs from one at the basement to ten at the top.
What does it cover?
NGSS MS-LS4-1: analyze and interpret data for patterns in the fossil record that document the existence, diversity, extinction, and change of life forms throughout the history of life on Earth. Every graded question asks about patterns and body structures, never about naming a species or an era, which is the standard's assessment boundary. Scientific names appear on screen for curiosity. The column is a verified composite of Colorado's rock record with real formation names and ages, so the numbers on every graph are real ones. How long does it take?
20 to 30 minutes for the quick version, or one 50 minute middle school lesson in which the class certifies a museum's four wall claims against the rock, then watches the real dig team working the layers just above the extinction line near Denver.
