What do students do?

Students press one button and gravity does the rest: a dark cloud half a light-year across collapses, spins up, flattens into a disk, and, if there's enough gas, ignites. The centerpiece is a real experiment. Students hunt for the smallest amount of gas that still makes a star, logging every run and closing in on the true dividing line at 0.08 solar masses, below which the cloud settles into a brown dwarf instead. Then they go big, building a blue-white giant from twenty Suns' worth of gas, zooming from the whole cloud down to the newborn star, and comparing every stage against real telescope photos from ESO, ALMA, and Hubble. The ignition readout even tells each star's future, including how it will end.

What does it cover?

NGSS MS-ESS1-2: develop and use a model to describe the role of gravity in the motions within galaxies and the solar system. Star colors follow real blackbody physics, so students also discover that the Sun is white-hot at 5,800 kelvin, not yellow. Key vocabulary: molecular cloud, protostar, accretion disk, nuclear fusion, brown dwarf, solar mass.

How long does it take?
